Allen received the degree within psychology from Purdue University in 1987. Fallowing graduation, he began working in a print media, 1st sustaining the Lafayette, Indiana Journal and Courier, then for Chicago and Esquire magazines before becoming the member of the Fab Five. He continues as a contributive editor to Esquire.
